For upon |Growing up, you were likely always told to brush your teeth in the morning and before bed, and told not to eat too much sugar because it’s not good for your teeth. For many people, as adults, they now struggle with their oral health because it somehow doesn’t seem to have the same urgency as looking after other health concerns.
So, whether you’re looking to improve your dental hygiene overall or you just want some tips on keeping a better level of oral health, here are a few good tips for keeping your teeth and gums healthy on an ongoing basis.
Brush daily
Although this may sound completely obvious, it’s important to remember that just like you need to wash your face and the rest of your body each day, your mouth also needs to be cleaned each day.
Of course, it’s not the end of the world if you fall asleep one night before you remember to brush your teeth, but it’s certainly not something you should forget about on a consistent basis.
Use an electric toothbrush
Many dentists will recommend you use an electric toothbrush instead of a manual one, and there’s a good reason for this. They are far more effective at providing an overall deeper clean and they really do reach places that manual toothbrushes just can’t, so removing things like plaque really is much easier with an electric toothbrush.
They’re also more cost-effective because although the upfront cost is more than a manual one, you only need to replace the heads every few months, and generally when you buy them, they come with a few replacement heads, so the long term cost is definitely less.
Get regular check-ups
As a standard rule, it’s a good idea to try and get to the dentist for a general check-up at least every 6 months, more if you have specific issues that you need dealt with, and of course if you’re undergoing treatment for something, then the frequency will be different.
It’s understandable to not enjoy or even be afraid of the dentist, but it really is worth having check-ups in the long run. If you’re overdue for an appointment, then you could have a look online to see who is accepting patients in your area. For example, those who are based in central London may want to research a suitable dentist in Croydon or specific to the town or city you live. Finding a local dentist will make it easier to get to appointments on time without it affecting your schedule too much.
Floss
Brushing alone is not completely effective at reaching every part of the mouth to remove bacteria and even food particles between the teeth, so that’s where flossing comes in, and although it’s an extra step that can be a bit cumbersome, it’s really worth doing because it does make a difference. If you want to go the extra step, then consider getting yourself a water flosser and see what a difference they make to your overall dental health.
