Should Teachers Give Homework?

220

For upon |Homework is defined by schoolwork that a student is required to do at home (Google Dictionaries). Yet, students may be given time to complete homework at school. Many children believe that there is no point in homework. Homework helps you prepare for a certain event or situation. Therefore there is a point in homework however, teachers may give too much of it. I strongly believe that teachers should in fact, give out homework because it will improve your child’s understanding of the material, homework can give time to practice schoolwork, and allows parents to see and understand what their children are learning in school.

One reason teachers should give homework is to improve your understanding of the material. A good understanding of the material can lead to many things. First, it will improve your overall grades. Good grades help you get into a good college, which helps you get a good job. Getting a good job helps you become more successful in life. In the article Does Homework Improve Academic Achievement?, author Harris Cooper states “The results of such studies suggest that homework can improve students’ scores on the class tests that come at the end of a topic. Students assigned homework in 2nd grade did better on math, 3rd and 4th graders did better on English skills and vocabulary, 5th graders on social studies, 9th through 12th graders on American history, and 12th graders on Shakespeare.” As stated in the text studies have shown that assigning homework to students of all ages will improve their overall grade as well as a certain subjects grade.

Another reason students should receive homework is it will teach children responsibilities and children will grow to become more trusted. In the article Why Homework Is Actually Good For Kids author Glenda Faye Pryor-Johnson states “The homework assignment is your child’s responsibility (not yours). When students assume responsibility for their homework and complete an assignment, it is only then that they learn to be accountable for their actions. Students complete their assignments or projects on time when they are organized. Turning the project in on time has it advantages because points are not deducted and your child won’t suffer consequences.Homework teaches kids how to deal with adversity. Your child can take pride in finishing an assignment regardless of difficulties or problems.” As best said by Glenda Faye Pryor-Johnson students will learn that by being given homework they will be gaining trust and responsibilities by completing homework to their best abilities.

The final reason children should be given homework is so children are able to practice their schoolwork. Having homework also allows their parents to see and understand what their kids are learning in school. Although children need time for extracurricular activities having a good education is more important. In the article 5 Reasons Kids Need Homework and 5 Reasons They Don’t the author states “and finally it allows parents to see how their children are being educated and they can develop a better idea of how they can help their child. However, some parents, students and even some teachers feel that after 7-8 hours of lessons in school, it is unfair to expect students to come home and work for another three hours.” This piece of text is saying that by giving children homework you are allowing parents to see and understand what their children are learning. However, after learning for 7-8 hours children shouldn’t be given loads of homework that could take multiple hours to complete.

As you can see homework can in fact be a good thing. For example, homework will improve your child’s understanding of the material, homework can give time to practice schoolwork, and allows parents to see and understand what their children are learning in school. Homework can also prepare you for a certain event or situation.

I agree with you! Children should be given homework but not too much that it makes them annoyed and tired.
