Retail apocalypse: Women disproportionately impacted by job cuts, report says

Females have disproportionately felt the effects from the ongoing “retail apocalypse,” as conventional brick-and-mortar stores slice work and shut suppliers amid sagging sales.

Retailers cut around 129,000 internet work belonging to gals from November 2016 to November 2017, the Institute for Women’s Coverage Exploration explained, citing U.S. Section of Labor Statistics. Despite that detrimental trend, adult men gained 106,000 retail industry careers around a similar period of time.

The cuts experienced the largest impact on females performing in general goods or department merchants. Females missing about 161,000 work opportunities in that retail sector from October 2016 to Oct 2017, although adult males gained 87,800 work opportunities. The retail work losses for girls mark the longest stretch of declines from the industry given that the Great Economic downturn while in the late 2000s, the IWPR explained.

Females working in other industries have fared far better over the last 12 months. The tutorial and overall health services sector has included 143,000 positions year-over-year, when the leisure and hospitality industry has additional 109,000 paying positions for women.

Abercrombie & Fitch, CVS, J. Crew and Macy’s are just a few prominent retailers who have closed stores this year amid a changing retail landscape. Brick-and-mortar retailers are pivoting toward new business practices as store foot traffic declines and more customers turn to e-commerce options like Amazon to do their shopping.
