Time names ‘MeToo’ movement as 2017 Person of the Year

The anti-harassment #MeToo movement is named Time magazine’s Individual of the 12 months.

From the wake of sexual misconduct revelations about Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and dozens of other men, tens of millions globally have shared their tales about being sexually harassed and assaulted. The movement commenced spontaneously in October after actress-activist Alyssa Milano followed over a recommendation from a pal of the buddy on Facebook and tweeted: “If you have been sexually harassed or assaulted generate ‘me too’ being a reply to this tweet.” The hashtag was tweeted just about a million moments in 48 several hours. The #MeToo movement was started by activist Tarana Burke on Twitter a decade back to raise consciousness about sexual violence.

Time’s announcement was designed Wednesday on NBC’s “Today” clearly show, exactly where longtime host Matt Lauer was fired final 7 days amid harassment allegations. “Today” host Savannah Guthrie acknowledged Wednesday this year’s winner hits “close to home” and talked about Lauer by title.

The 2 runners-up had been Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump, himself accused of sexual misconduct by various girls. He has denied any wrongdoing.
